The Suffren bridge, not Iena. The thing on the aftermost bridge is the compass - not the searchlight. Suffren had 6 searchlights - 2 on the mast tops, 2 in the hull in the bow and 2 on the pope balcony. As far as the length is concerned - Suffren's WL = 124,3



As for the Carnot et Charles Martel - I do not know any their plans published.

Another thing,
I doubt that the yellow/grey colour existed. I know it was pure white.
Another thing - green and red underwater hull - colours. I do not know the exact colour but I suppose it to be homogenious.

Well... You have drawn searchlights in Iena as well - it's a mistake. She had 6 searchlights disposed in the same manner as in Suffren. The thing on the bridge is the compass.

If you know the superstructure was white - would you please share your source? Especially if that source also contains hints about the colour of the underwater hull? We've had some discussion about that here. I have not ever seen a genuine colour photograph of any ship of the era, and other sources (paintings, graphics or pictures of models) show both white and buff superstructures, sometimes for the same ship. Do you have access to some sort of french regulations for paint schemes?

Unfortunately I do not have any documents about painting.
But I came through some post-cards like this


unfortunately I do not collect post-cards and it is the single speciment I've found.
That was issued in the beginning of the century. Of course it is not a total witness but still.

There is one more means to define - which colour was used.
Please compare both colours in the black-n-white photo.

The hull is white and the upper structure is of what you've painted battleships.

Older battleships - yes. This one is painted yellow-grey. It is her earliest known by me photo. she entered the service in 1891 04 18.

I think now, that to the 1895 or a bit later they were painted as you have indicated. But never ships you've drawn.

C'est Magnifique Its a real joy to see these old warships being drawn.

Hello there

OK, obviously there are sources and sources. Some of mine seem to represent minority opinions (especially that the Suffren has a LPP of 125,5 m and not a LOA). I also seem to have overlooked that searchlights were sometimes hull-mounted back then, which led to a certain overkill. And most disturbingly, I got Suffren's tertiary battery all wrong. I changed some aspects, new pics below:

Hello again,

behold the second-ugliest of france's pre-dreadnoughts (the all-time champ Masséna is next). This one was tricky, as there seem to be no surviving drawings of her at all and I had to use photographs only; luckily, there are some which show her directly from aside. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome.
