Commander Salvatore Todaro, beloved for his humanity by his crew and even by the enemy, was also known as the Gentleman of the seas or the Don Quijote of the seas.
He becomes famous all over the world because on October 15th, 1940 he sank the Kabalo, a Belgian trading vessel operating under British flag but, on his own risk, he rescued the 26 crew members towing the lifeboat four days long and later keeping them on the board till Azores. His answer to the official reprimand of Admiral Dönitz, commander of the joint submarine operation, was that he cannot do anything else "having to honor more than 2000 years of hystory"... And then, when he sank British vessel Shakespeare, he rescued again the wrecked crew.

Excellent work and great piece of history to remember.

Another amazing thing about this sub that i was owned by almost every waring nation in WW2.

Maybe there is a small misunderstanding: this unit never was under the American flag but after the ww2 a Balao-class sub was transferred from Us to Italy had the same name...

actually the US navy indeed had put it's hands on the Cappellini at the end of the war, but only to scuttle her in the Kii channel (one of the channels linking the japanese inland sea to the pacific ocean).

Awsome drawing Lazer! I love the colors!

The colors are 99% the original ones: I had a very long discussion with an expert about this topic.

This palette should apply to most of the italian subs operating from Bordeaux. The others had different colors plus camouflage...

I am starting a very long project leading to a full SB guide of the Italian subs: during ww2 Italy had 272 subs ...

Excellent shipmate ; and a most interesting history. IIRC, there was another famous operation involving a German sub that attempted to rescue a large number of crew fom sunk ships.
