I got you. And you are quite right - that was a image texture map - applied on the model. I am not a programmer that's wiki example a real abrakadabra to me. The way I do is simplier and faster.

Since this is a place for 3D models I thougth I`d cut in one of mine. I`ve been working on this for quite some time. It`s the German H-39 class battleship. Part of the Z plan.

Pretty interesting so far. I dont think its to early in the modeling process to add edge loops around the deck greay part of the main deck.

edge loops? why would I do that? that has absolutely no meaning in shipbuilding.

Probably not, but it does in 3D modelling. I would do a search on Google(tm) for "Hard Surface Modelling" techniques. And you definately need some edge loops in there.

here is a quick example of how edge loops work.
