Well, every carrier designed and built ever since owes something to the Furious experiment. It taught one vital lesson. You need a flat deck without a huge superstructure and funnels in the middle to crash into. Squadron Commander Edwin Dunning, who landed on the forecastle platform twice, had to loose his life attempting the same stunt, before they fitted the rear landing deck - which in reality was next to useless as well. I should think trying to land an airship on that deck given the funnel gases over the rear part of the ship must have been fun too!

Not just the gases but the turbulence would have made control difficult if not impossible. The gases would have had different temperature to the air as well which would alter the lift properties of the lifting gas in the airships envelope, meaning lots of extra work with the ballonets and/or ballast just to keep control.

The other two sisters of this class, HMS Courageous and HMS Glorious as originally completed.

[ img ]
HMS Courageous in spring 1917 with minerails for up to 222 mines, but she was never used as a minelayer.

HMS Courageous later in 1917 with extra torpedo tubes fitted and minerails removed.

HMS Glorious in 1918 with turret platforms added for Sopwith Pups and anti-splinter matting over her bridge spaces.

Also, a revised Furious in 1917 and in 1918 with a new crest thanks to Kim and BH's research.

great drawings hood, even more significant given the fact that i've always disliked the appearance of the Corageous class ships.

Here a preview of what to come. The starboard side is complete in the 1918 camo paint, but we will do her the "Bombhead-way". That means both sides and the top view. So for now only to give the joying of expectation :D

Edit: Updated and close to be complete.
