Does anyone know what the box like structures with the overhanging roofs on the main deck and 0-2 level are? I've seen something similar on German ships but never on American ships and I'm not sure what they are and what they do.

I would suppose something like ventilation houses. but that is more based on 'what else can it be' then 'that is it!', to be honest.

That would be my guess too. They bring down fresh air to the below-decks so the men working there don't suffocate and die. Needless to say they're rather important.

Yeah they look a lot like ventilation cowlings as they're too big to be ready use lockers of ammunition for the secondaries and tertiaries.

Could have been an experimental decision by the shipwright which was abandoned or considered not worthwhile. Do any other source images show these?

I cant see them if they are in any other picture/artists concept, but they seem to be in all the line drawings. They are also on the 1/700 scale model of the ship i made a while back. They dont show up on the previous two designs for the class, nor on the hood, which this design was loosely based on. they seem to just materialize out of nowhere from a design standpoint, and never be used again, not even on the ships completed as carriers.

They're on all ships (more or less) but often get obscured by boats or other equipment, or are otherwise hidden from a sideplan view for some reason.

or just of an different design. note that ventilation houses can be reworked in the structure, can be made into a lot smaller pipes with an fan at the bottom, etc. there is a lot possible.
