Quite. For the US, who has CATOBAR carriers, the increase in capability is outweighed by the loss of usable deck space for helicopter operations. For other nations (Spain, Italy, & Australia) the metric is reversed.

Agreed. He says it's going to be an amphious assault ship, so therefore a ski jump isn't the best idea. I personally can't figure out the point of a ski jump on the Canberras; the Aussies don't have STOVL aircraft to fly off them, and it just takes up helo spots.

It was probably cheaper to build the ship with the ski-jump, then redesign it without it. The Canberra was designed by the Spanish Navantia Ferrol Shipyard and is a variation of Spain's Juan Carlos I.

'the aussies' kept the ski jump because that was cheaper. the canberra class's design is so that the ski jump takes next to none actual deck space, as it is on the very edge of the bow. the fact that they didn't use the spot right next to it for parking, like the invincible class does, says enough about the need and/or possibilities for deck park on that spot.

the drawback of an ramp is that it takes space for helicopter. the advantage of it is that it shortens the runway you need for STOVL aircraft, which frees space for helicopters and parking.

keep in mind that the invincibles originally were envisioned as helicarriers first, harrier carriers second by the RN.

Ha-ha indeed. To each their own, I guess. The difference is, as I said, what you intend to use it for. If you're doin STOVL strike aircraft like the Harrier as your primary mission, then yes, a ramp is necessary. If you're usin it as a helicopter carrying amphib, the ramp just wastes flight deck space since choppers don't need it anyway. Everybody has their own ideas though.

okay, his revised wish is now ski jump, doors dont matter bc everything will he helo-lifted (which i think he needs the stern hatches for landing craft), and an island that's as small as possible. What would you all suggest?

Well like Rodondo said he basically wants a Canberra/Juan Carlos or Cavour class type ship. You can use those ships as a basis. How much of this ships role is amphibious assault versus helicopter/STOVL carrier? This and his fleets composition effects his need for landing craft and a well deck on his ship. For island size, look at the IRL ships I mentioned and others to learn how big the island needs to be, they probably should not be any smaller than those for a realistic ship.
