Very nice Bezzo. As for the absence of a radar on the middle mast, I believe it was due to top-weight considerations, as all ships suffered from that.

I know about the top weight concern, Novice. The odd thing is that both Topeka and the Springfield sported an SPS-30 height finder there! So why just the Providence then? My suspicion is cost. It simply was not considered worth the money to replace the SPS-8B! But for this decision, no official reason was given, as was the case with Topeka's tripod instead of a lattice mast.

The Clevelands even in WWII config always had topweight issues. Obviously it wasn't that much of an issue to outweigh what they gained otherwise.

I'm willing to bet it's what bezo just said, cost.
