Don't know yet, Aoba it's currently my slowest working project, im still searching references for the various versions while tracing and drawing (Aoba around 1944/45 would come first tough)
Those are both good points, i have thiked about the ventilation slits but i have not yet found a way to draw them without making the turrets look messy and ugly; for the floatplanes, i have not found references stating that she still carried them and, at the same time, no reference stating the opposite... your reasoning sounds valid too tough, maybe i could search around to see if anyone found the remains of the seaplanes when the wreck was surveyed because as far is i know no seaplanes where launched during Haguro's last battle; so if they are not around it will be almost certain that she have not them on board (and thus i can remove them from the drawing).

as a plus, the WIP for the Spithead version of Ashigara(figuring out the flags even from coloured references proves to be really hard...)

The best bet for references would be to check out Eric LaCroix & Linton Wells III's book Japanese Cruisers of the Pacific War. I have several photos of the two in various times of their careers.

Well, thank you for your kind response. I'm confident that you're going to find solutions to these issues soon enough. Let me remind you that your drawings are awesome, real top-notch artwork, so these additions or alteration would only perfect them further. Gosh, you make me feel as an incidental hack!

Incidental hack? not at all Bezo

Having a day off from university i spent the morning searching infos about Haguro's wreck and i have not found any mention about seaplane remains, so i'm quite about confident about it and i have removed the planes from Haguro's 1945 drawing; just in case it comes out i'm wrong it will be easy to put them back, just as it was easy to delete them..

also, here are my ideas for the venitlation slits:


On the left, my initial plan for them, wich do not please me at all as the black lines made the slits look three pixels high, they are too big and they ruin the balance of the gun, or at least that's my feeling about it.
On the right a possible solution wich comes to my mind this morning; i tried to recreate the effect by just adding black dots along the dark grey line wich indicates the break between the sides and the top of the turrets; it's more subtile but i think it could do the job while beign more pleasing tot he eye.

Hmmm...it's a tough decision. I do like your first version, and I'll tell you why: it does, for all its other flaws, clearly show a representation of the slight downward slope of the gunhouse roof, the second version, is neater, but does not show this feature. This leads me to suggest that, while doing the sharp break in the angle between roof and side plating in black outline, the slits can be a dark shade of grey, so as to break up the contrast. I do believe, that you ought to focus on your first version, since it appear to have a more correct overall appearance.

Understood, i still have a preference for the second version, but i tried more variations in order to match correct shapes and aesthetics.

edit: and an update for the 1937 Ashigara, i'm still in the midst of identifying all the flags, but once i'm done with them she will be finished; see some posts above for the picture.
