I'm re-posting these two ships here just for the sake of keeping all the Portuguese navy in one thread. I'll throw in some information in case anyone is interested


NRP D. Carlos I (ex-USNS Audacious, T-AGOS-11) was transferred to Portugal in February 1997. She was re-equipped for hydrographic and oceanographic duties and has been used extensively for these purposes since. She named after Carlos I, the king of Portugal who himself was quite a prominent man of marine science. Every single one of the four yachts he owned doubled as an oceanographic ship.


NRP Almirante Gago Coutinho (ex-USNS Assurance, T-AGOS-5) joined the Marinha Portuguesa in September of 1999. She's named after Portuguese vice-admiral Carlos Viegas Gago Coutinho who was not only a distinguished Navy officer but a geographer and navigator during the first half of the 20th century.

Both ships are used for both scientific studies and support during naval exercises.

These two colonial sloops (officially designated "aviso 2nd class") were designed and built in Portugal in the 1930's. They were "small sisters" of the Albuquerque class, being armed with the same guns. Both survived the WW2 and served till the 1960's.

Here's a post-war patrol boat, the Maio class. It was a French spin-off of the US PC-461 class sub-chasers. The first three ships were built in France, the rest - in Portugal.

this comes late as info but only today I found this thread.

The Baptista de Andrade did not have hedgehog in front of the bridge, as oposed to her older sister class João Coutinho

here you can see a pic of the BdA when she was very recent in the PN. You will notice, no hedgehog
