That mast IS too thick and heavy. Look at Arleigh Burke class and its Japanese derivatives (since You've mentioned, that it's going to be an AEGIS-equipped ship, with antennas below the bridge, they are the closest example). They have relatively thin masts, since they have problems with topweight already.

Yea I told him that it was better to have a short mast due to the AEGIS going below the bridge. Thus we wont need gigantic radar equipment on a very heavy mast.

In fact, if you have an AEM/S Mast, your mast could go thicker instead of thinner.

It was called the Advanced Enclosed Mast Sensor/System or AEMS/S.
