I understand how that could be a major maintenance nightmare, but to make it easier in the field I was going to use access panels as a work platform
Well with work platforms it will be just a little less nightmare. :D Jet engine is a very delicate thing, even soviets ones, they need constant maintenance. Technical inspection after every flight and big checkup after some time. Engine is remove, ride on special platform to workshop and then mechanic show them some love. ;) In your case ... that will be nightmare, you will need special crane to remove engine. All this procedure will be unnecessarily complex and time consuming.

And just one more thing ... If you think that this is souch good idea ... why there is absolutely not a single plane with that kind of engine setup ? ;) In other hand, you can make that plane this way but you will walk away from realism to comix zone. :D

Maintenance panels to access the engines like what you're talking about would be a very bad idea - they create large void spaces that in turn create engineering problems and eliminate fuel storage, and add unnecessary complexity to what's already one of the most complex set-ups for a subsonic design I've yet seen. Doing heavy checks at platforms designed for the cause would honestly be preferable.

As for why nobody does it, that's already been explained ad nauseum by now. But it's at the borderline where I think it's up to you whether you want to keep this setup or convert it to a more conventional one. I'll admit, it does add visual interest and prevents it from looking like you ripped off whoever drew the An-124 in Shipbucket scale.

Or - I just came up with an idea - have extra-long nacelles that hug the wing so you get the Coanda effect and you can lower the engines from the wing without the wing obstructing them (like the rear engine on a DC-10).

That is a fantastic idea. I I'll do that instead. Plus, it will help balance the COG because I think the wing is too far back.

As for the C145 and C120, since I'm already using Boeing derived designs, I think I'm just going to go with a C-17 and a domestic design of something like the C-130.

Are you talking something like this?

The top one is the new wing. I can put the engines out further, but I will have to redesign the pod.

They need to be especially far out where they clear the wing entirely, and I'd study the nacelles on the An-72.

I'd also think about adding some struts. You might be even able to fake-out a box wing.

An update on my Heavy Aviation Cruiser.

I haven't done a whole lot, but I've reconfigured some of the structure.

As for the Cargo aircraft, I'll keep working on it and see what I can do.

Its looking pretty good
you probably would like a VLS that can carry more than just a long range SAM though

So You decided to drop the Kiev-esque layout altogether and went rather for something Moskva-ish? Oh, what a pity... ;)
Personally I'd move the aft CIWS either to the level of the bridge or to a small sponsons more on the sides (or both), so the hangar entrance area would be less cramped.
Anyway, it emerges as an quite interesting design. :)

This could be a class of one and there might be another class that is more Kiev-esc.
