sinc you have VLS you don't need ABL and by moving the VLS a bit you can have the harpoon there, you can have them en on the aft deck to because guns very often shoot over side for preventing damage to the deck. bud you have to remember to make place for a helicopter to land. missile director and gun director can you move down a deck. for there are not need for the aft superstructure to be that high.

Ok, implemented some changes to BB-79 using Heuhen and Chris Roach suggestions as basis.

-deleted one of the RAM launchers
-deleted all ABL
-lowered the VLS by 5 meters, also shifted in place of the removed ABL
-scaled the VLS cells from 247 to 186 (256 ESSM in 64 quadpacks, 32 RIM-156, 32 RIM-161, 58 Tomahawks) in two 93-cell mounts, one port one starboard
-moved both Harpoon launcher next to each other where the VLS once was (also lowered the whole aft superstructure by a couple of meters
-moved the aft phalanx about 7 meters to the front in order to lower the Mark 37/25 and SPG-62 directors whithout impairing them
-placed SPY-1 arrays in a Ticonderoga setup (also, the aft-facing one it's not on centerline in order to avoid beign impaired by the Mark 37/25 director)
-removed the compass platform in order to fit the front-facing array, enlarged a bit the main bridge to make up for the loss
-implemented the same changes to the short hull version (the one with no 8-inch guns as suggested by Thiel) wich now has become BB-80 Oklahoma.

just a nitpick. if you can you should lover the forward SPY-1 a bit. for example to just above the gun director. For if I am not remembering wrong, we have had a discussion in SB about how high SPY-1 can be mounted be mounted. (What I believe it's all about weight) And what I am told by a navy elctro engineer is that if you mount the SPY-1 to low you can get a type of problem (flash/blimp/fogy view) that can be fixed by mounting it higher, but he had never heard about a limit on hove high just he limit of what the vessel can carry.

My suggestion is to look at other vessels with SPY-1 and place those SPY-1 in a bit similar high. if you can't get i so low you can just say someone come with a solution to fix that problem and thus you can have it that high (IT's AU afterall)

Nice work.

A few things I would do (not critical) include updating the SLQ-32 to the latest version (which can be found in the USN parts thread). I'd also think about replacing all of the old gun direction equipment with more modern kit such as SPQ-9 and SPG-60 (you already have an SPQ-9 between the main tower and the funnel so you wouldn't be adding much in the way of new equipment).

One last thing I would do is I would swap out the main air search radar you have for the planar SPS-49. It was a '90s proposal that would have increased the performance of the SPS-49, and would have an aesthetic closer to what you have there while being a US part. I think it is already posted in the USN parts thread, but I'll try and get it posted in this thread later tonight.

One final note before I post this is that I'd replace the TACAN unit atop the aft pole mast with the newer rendition that can be found on the Spruance drawings.

Two questions TimothyC, one related and one not related to your suggestions:

-about the Mark 37/25 and the Mark 38/13:
my idea for BB-79 (and now also for BB-80) was that they where first refitted in 1982/83 just as the Iowas where, thus retaining the old WWII directors despite the addition of new systems, and then refitted again in the 00's with the addition of SPY systems and VLS; would an hypotetic second refit for the Iowas require the replacement of the old fire-control directors? and just the MK37/25 or also the 38/13? in that case SPQ-9 will replace the MK37/25 and SPG-60 the MK38/13 or the setup will be different?

-where i can find the updated templates? i have only the XXL one and i can't remember where i find it, the ones in the main sites are outdated if i'm not mistaken

As for the fire-control directors, i'll probably think about it on a long-term basis or leave them as they are now; so i'm calling BB-79 and BB-80 as completed.
