By the 1980s, the Type 206 that Pallamara had been making due with were showing their age, and it was imperative that a replacement be found. Options were tendered by German, Swedish, Dutch, and French companies, and in the end, a derivative of the Dutch Walrus Klasse was chosen. The design had to be enlarged because of the wider operating radius required for the Indian Ocean, and the design was lengthened again when when an AIP module was added as part of the upgrade program. Despite the improvements made during the upgrade program, which will see the vessels operating into the 2020s, the design is starting to show its age, prompting another sub order being made for a heavily modified Type 214. Although relations with Germany are good, the order has been placed through an Italian shipyard. The total numbers of sub at present are as follows:

1 x Type 206 (Training boat, soon to be museum, with duties being taken over by oldest of Haai Klasse)
6 x Haai Klasse
3 x Type 214, with three more planned.

Having a population of just over 5 million people, and with its present day oil wealth not being discovered until the 1960s, there wasn't much room in the budget for naval expansion, the nation having traditionally relied on the Royal Navy, with most of its vessels used for either coastal defence, or with assisting the Dutch in anti-piracy patrols. With the growing size of the Japanese navy, however, some modest naval increase was funded in the mid 1930s, despite the Depression. Looking around at various designs, the RN Arethusia Class CL was attractive as it represented the smallest practical vessel usable for traditional cruiser duties, and three were built in Pallamaran yards to the design, modified to Pallamaran tastes.

Shown here is the PSS (Pallamaran Staadtschip) Von Ravensburg, sunk at the battle of the Java Sea on Febuary 27, 1942, covering the withdrawal of Allied vessels from the action. The other two vessels, survived the war.

That's pretty much a ugly bastard!

It wasn't as if I stuck 18" gun turrets on it and reduced the draft to a couple of feet. Namely, I wanted to get some height for the rangefinder and give it some national character. It has about the same sort of mast as the Dutch Java, so it can't be that bad. If I were using something heavier than 6" guns, I would have went with the full director from Deutschland, but it seemed rather absurd to have that giant director for dinky little guns like that. My only real doubt was the need for the rear tower structure, but figured it could be useful in case the forward one was knocked out in battle.

The Hr.Ms. Jave? Hmm If you make a design with closer funnels (more side by side) it's be better IMO.

Okay, yes, to some it may be an ugly design, but he did consult me on it, I didn't see anything wrong with it, in fact I suggested some things that might have made it uglier to some of you, it is a functional design.

Thanks! Perhaps over the weekend, I'll do a later version with increased AA. Aside from the practical aspects of the higher director, these vessels and one (As of yet undesigned) CDS, these are the largest vessels in inventory, and have to handle duties ranging from trade protection, showing the flag, to coastal defence, so there is a desire to make them as impressive looking as possible.
