... Okay, some of you may remember me from my half hearted attempt to draw the Aurora Australis (since done by Lazer) back on the old forum that scared Golly into his first icebreaker binge. Anyway, got slightly overwhelmed with my honours thesis, so haven't really been participating here... But here's a relatively crude cut'n'paste job derived from Flavian Amphitheatre's ( ) Brooke class


Swan class Frigate
With Indonesia increasingly falling under Soviet influence the threat of modern Submarines came home to the Royal Australian Navy. The newly commissioned Type 12 Frigates had already been outpaced by Submarine development and so the need for a new class of ASW escort became paramount. Initial plans were to develop a Helicopter carrying variant of the Charles F Adams class, however this turned out to be cost prohibitive. Instead the RAN settled on a derivative of the Brooke class.

Armoutment (as designed):
1 x 5 inch 54 calibre gun
2 x Sea Mauler point defense SAM launchers (6 round/launcher plus 18 reloads for foward launcher)
2 x Ikara ASW missile launchers (32 rounds)
2 x Mk 32 Triple 12.7 inch ASW torpedo tubes
1 x Wessex ASW Helicopter
Assorted light weapons including 50 cal and 7.62mm Machine guns

Armoutment (as commisioned):
1 x 5 inch 54 calibre gun
2 x Sea Cat point defense SAM launchers (4 round/launcher)
2 x Ikara ASW missile launchers (32 rounds)
2 x Mk 32 Triple 12.7 inch ASW torpedo tubes
1 x Wessex ASW Helicopter
Assorted light weapons including 50 cal and 7.62mm Machine guns

Armoutment (post 1980 refit):
1 x 5 inch 54 calibre gun
1 x Sea Sparrow point defense missile system (8 round launcher and 16 reloads)
2 x Ikara ASW and Antiship missile launchers (32 rounds)
2 x Mk 32 Triple 12.7 inch ASW torpedo tubes
1 x Wessex or Sea King ASW Helicopter
Assorted light weapons including 50 cal and 7.62mm Machine guns

And yeah, before anyone mentions it, I know that 2xIkara launcher plus helo is probably going overboard on ASW weapons...

The problem is with the Mk 42 compared to Mk 38 (which the Garcias/Brookes had) was that the Mk 42 is a much, much larger system than Mk 38 in terms of below-decks workings. Considering the hull here, I'm not sure if it would actually fit (note that the Garcias/Brookes were being built when the Mk 42 had already been the standard 5-inch naval gun for the USN for a while now).

Interesting project Chris: particularly getting Ikara aboard. In terms of a design to complement the Type 12's (and not as in the Perry's replace them), I can't see the RAN choosing the Brooke class, there just not being enough of an improvement over the existing type; but that apart I like the overall concept.

all true but USN Knox class had the Mk42 gun in a hull much like the Brooke/Garcia class (in term of line as the Knox class were a smidge bigger)

a Knox class mod was the route I was thinking about for that design myself, since you want an ASW rather than an AAW platform. I modified the Brooke for my Ariane class, replacing the stack with the Knox mack combo.

A point of criticism regarding your design: The Wessex helicopter needs an 80ft by 40ft landing pad, and a hangar with the following dimmensions 40ft by 19ft by 17ft. Width of the hangar si for the craft itself with no maintainance facilities.

Okay, got a little time, so I'll reply:

Klagldsf - Thanks for the advise... I was a bit unsure if the 54cal vs 38cal fit was a result of hull limitations or just a matter of reusing second hand weapons for the sake of economy. Guess if I rework this vessel I'll need to bear that in mind.

Bill - Thanks... I had intended this as a bit of an AU project (more pro-Soviet Indonesia...) that forced the RAN to get ASW helos afloat on more than just Melbourne and personally didn't think the Type 12s were really up to taking the helo and a limited SAM armourment. I did think of a helo-carrying version of the Perth class but that would have been more difficult to rework and in real life would probably have been more expensive than practicle.

Novice - Okay, I'll look into it a bit more. Just eyeballing it, I think the helo pad is a little too short (20m vs ~25m) but will need to double check the beam. Just to clarify the hanger dimensions... are you specifying length-height width or length-width-height?
