Excellent update of one of the sleekest looking ships of the cold war era.

The one thing about these ships that has always bothered me is the very strange bridge superstructure; it seems very basic and I can't see why the Soviets couldn't provide a bit more space for the crew? But being Soviet that might be a redundant concern

Bill, the small bridge was a hangover from the design concepts then current in Soviet warships to remove bridges altogether, probably similar to the concerns in Britain that led to the Type 15 low bridges, since the best place for the commanders and operations staff was in the hull where there was more space and protection. Other Soviet ships like the Pr.63 from this period also had very small bridges for navigation only. I think the Pr.61 was made bigger than originally planned but it was still very small.

Thank Hood; that does explain why it is so sparse - so apart from 'conning' most else went on below decks.

Pr-61 was one of the first Soviet ships designed to survive in nuclear conditions. I think there was idea towards having all vital sailing features deeply burried in the main deck level for the ship to survive back to port after devastating nuclear blast. Also, as they were first gas-turbine ships build for still rather basic old steam plant plan, they suddenly didn't have all that huge weigth of boilers and turbines down in the deep, so there had to be carefull consideration of how to to land the upper decks in order to retain stability.

They would match up with the Adams class in overall effectiveness. Both had about the same number of SAM. Adams had ASROC, Kashin had gas turbines and higher speed.

just a question: shouldn't be the helo posed on the helipad? there is a hangar on those ships (at least on the indian ones)



it would be nice to have the last pair too: see bottom of this drawing "RANVIJAY"- with the vertical launcher for Barak missiles..

or INS Rajput with BrahMos ASCM fitted (has replaced two of the SS-N-2D Styx launchers) with its own boxed launchers.
