Hurricane, Spitfire and Bf-109 are the iconic figthers that I grew up to love when WWII (outside of our part and history) was more of a fascinating epic story than a reall historical event. Naturally the Bf-109 ("mersu" as our airforces called it, sharing the nick name of mercedes-benz cars and all what assosiates to them) Is sort of closest to my heart and comes up to my mind first when I have to think about that era and air forces. Bwester Buffalo is other, and its amazing how that little thing has almost mythical super-figther status in finnish war history, and when you go out to the english language world, people helds it as a carbage...

I think this poll should be more of "favorite" since "best" should be something that the mathematical atributes and performance of thing should determ, not subjective opinions?

The Buffalo, I believe, got the "garbage" image because it was used in limited numbers, outnumbered and outclassed by Japanese aircraft of the period, and the pilots who flew it had been accustomed to nimble little biplane fighters.. In the hands of Finnish pilots though, they used it skillfully and to great effect. Even though still outnumbered by the USSR aircraft, they managed to work with the Buffaloes advantages rather than its faults, if that makes any sense. The Finns took a marginal aircraft and turned it into something greater through skill and daring. I have always loved the Buffalo.

The Mustang is the closest to my heart after sitting in one as a kid, hearing the glorious Merlin running, and watching it beat up the airfield and talking to the pilot. As a 6 year old kid with a thing for airplanes, there's no greater thing on earth! But if I were building an air force in 1945 and had to choose a prop plane, I'd go with the F4U any day of the week. It's performance in WWII and Korea is nothing short of legendary IMO.

Ok while I will make a favorite WW2 fighter poll (why not)
The point of this poll was more to see what the opinion of what was the best of the best in terms of the Ultimate best all around piston engined fighter sorry if that wasn't made clear
my personal WW2 favorite has to be the Wildcat
the F4F was quiet the plane and I think the Buffalo was known to be underpowered and outdated compared to a Zero but man those Finnish pilots could just go to town with them

Both the P-40 Warhawk and the F4F Wildcat did pretty good against superior enemies. As long as you use them the right way anything can be quite deadly. Remember, it was the weak Sherman that killed the mighty King Tiger.

F2A was a good fighter, in good hands. Early in to war he was still moder but like all US planes he was outclassed by Japs fighters in terms of maneuverability. Fins show us how you can fly a fighter ... but they was flaying against soviets, it is like shooting to fish in the barrel.

I always like early Fiat Falco, Italians know how to build fighters, in the end they design Macchi C.202 and 205. Small in numbers but just awesome planes.

Let me see, four and a half thousand Tiger Is, 500-1000 Tiger IIs against 50,000 Sherman tanks. That is how they won, sheer numbers.
