While there probably is not a single absolute best all around fighter I'm interested to see this boards opinion on what would be there preferred choice and ultimate piston engined fighter
granted most of these fighters if not all were made obsolete by the jet fighter almost right away
(I am not including Turbo Prop fighters)
So best most capable fighter from 1945 or late

I'm unaware of anyone ever making a fighter with a one piston engine. I imagine the flywheel would be detrimental to the ACs performance. :P

Edit: Also, no Spitfire?

Grumman F6F Hellcat

Made out of iron and steel, put a lot of lead downrange, and killed more aircraft than any other Allied fighter.

I believe that the Hellcat was the ultimate piston engine fighter.
When I say that, I'm talking about "I believe that among all the others available, it would be the one I would want be flying if someone was to be shooting at me while I was airborne" kind of 'ultimate.'

I'd have to say my personal preference would be the P-47D Thunderbolt. The thing was an armored truck with wings.
