This is embarrassing! Looks like what I used to do when I was about 5, messing around with cardboard boxes playing 'war'...

How is that embarrassing? They are rehearsing for an exercise. Minor operations like say Overlord was rehearsed like that.

I know it makes sense if you think about it: On ship, using whatever is available to rehearse and plan exercises; but it just looks like a bunch of kids have chucked their bedsheets on the floor and are playing invasion with home-made toys! Made me

Yeah, not at all embarrassing or silly! In fact, when I was a kid I used to build ships out of whatever stuff I had around me that conceivably could be used. I didn't glue it or anything like that; simply stacking and balancing stuff up. Boy that was fun, especially since you could afterwards "sink" the ship! That's how I played Bismarck...

You get fancy models in nice clean environments (I used to have a full set of them) but out in the "field" you use found materials or whatever on hand (a stapler is suddenly a PATRIOT battery) or better yet you end up writing "1st Plat 1st Bat" on a piece of paper. Hell, that's how most people play WH40K anymore.

So if anything it's extra-fancy compared to a lot of stuff. It looks like they have actual tabletop helo's too.

Sand Table Exercises always look kinda silly- till you try and go out without running through one.
Then, you are the one that looks kinda silly... or very dead, depending on circumstances.
