I should have mentioned in the specs that the 40mms are a "fitted for but not with" item on these vessels (in line with RAN common practises and lack of funding for capital projects).

Very interesting funnel arrangement, as well as an exceptional gob on details ;)

It seems like you guys get your militaries cut and cut and cut. I hear New Zealand doesn't even have a single fighter jet in service anymore.

That is just wrong.

For what their military does, it actually makes a certain amount of sense. Keeping a squadron of fast jets on the books isn't cheap, and due to their location, it doesn't buy them much of anything. Any major deployment where they need air support is going to be as a part of a coalition that will have air support. By not spending the money there, they can spend it on things that do add to combat ability (better training and equipment for ground forces, actually being able to deploy ships to the Polynesian states, ect.) and make them valuable partners in a coalition - and this in tern buys them geopolitical capital.

I can remember living in Nowra when I was posted to HS817 Squadron at HMAS Albatross. It was a common occurence to see (and hear) the RNZAF Skyhawks flying in the local airspace and over Jervis Bay playing wargames with RAN and RNZN fleet units. What a magic little aircraft they were. The Kiwi pilots were a laugh in the Officers Mess and I can assure you that the local sheep were always scared with the Kiwis around

But, like their RAN/RAAF counterparts, what they lack in quantity they make up for in quality. The Kiwi and Australian Defence Forces are world renown for their skill and courage under fire.

I remember reading that it severely reduced their homeland defense capability, which seemed silly to me.
