This has made my day So we're looking at a more 'low end' patrol frigate? Comaparing it to the ANZAC's later it looks o.k. apart from the main gun. IIRC there is definate bias in the RAN against the 76mm, as less useful - particularly against shore/surface targets; but that apart I like the 'cut of her jib'. We'll all be interested in the specs.

I was hessitant in using a 5inch due to the ships size and really didn't want to use the 76mm. Any suggestions?

How about the RN 4.5" gun?

You could go up to the French 100mm gun, down to the Swedish 57mm or abandon medium guns altogether and fit her with some sort of 20-40mm machine gun.

Nooooo sorry mate, but I wouldn't introduce the French mount, unless its across the fleet. What you'll end up with is the 5-in for some units, then the french 100mm competing for the same role; you won't be able to get the 100mm on to small hulls, whereas the 76mm is versatile. You definately won't want the 4.5-in on new build alongside similar with 5-in, and the 57mm is not much use against shore targets; and 40mm? way out!, they are for secondaries only. I like the concept of the RAN favouring USN systems, so if you reckon the Oto unit is too modern, there is always the US 3-in as well.

So I would reccommend staying with 76mm/3-in, unless you can get the 5-in aboard

How important is shore bombardment of this ship anyway? If very then you might consider some sort of mortar or rocket system instead, if somewhat then there really isn't any western alternatives to the OTO unless you're willing to buy used in the US. The OTO gives you a higher rate of fire, a smaller crew (IIRC the Mk34 needs a crew of six where the OTO needs 2 for sustained fire only), longer range and far superior AA performance.
Additionally, in the anti ship role its performance is only slighter lower the 5in/54.
If NGFS and Anti ship isn't a priority at all you might as well save the weight and volume and fit it with a large machine gun of some sort.

Edit: A 5in/38? Why on earth would you want one of those? Even the single mounts needed something like 15-18 men to crew and it's next to useless against modern jets, let alone missiles.

The Modele 1956 (100mm) was featured onboard the French A69 class corvettes which are even smaller than these, and the only sligthly larger Commandant Rivière could mount three of those. Also IMO everything that is even sligthly going to be called "general purpose" should feature proper gun If the ship is to be going for 1980's I definetly would go for either OTO or American ligth weigth 127mm and design the entire desing around it.
