The story behind the battle flag is an interesting one.
One of the Rising Suns actually deprived the Imperial Japanese Navy of a a baby flattop.
The
Drum sank one of the IJN's fleet seaplane carriers- the
Mizuho- in 1942. Shortly after her sinking, the IJN began converting the
Chitose and her sister to escort carriers. Had the
Mizuho survived, there is considerable possibility that she (and the
Nisshin, sunk by SB2C's) would have also been converted to help replace wartime carrier losses.
The
Drum's sinking of the
Mizuho winds up being one of the most under-rated, but possibly one of the more important, submarine kills of the war.
