SHIP PENNANT DESIGNATIONS OF GRAYS HARBOR
All ships registered in the Kingdom and Commonwealth, since 1885, share a designation system of letters and numbers for pennant and hull based on ship type. Prior to the Fleet Reorganization of 1885, ships carried a random 3 digit number for use, a number which could change many times throughout the life of the ship. Since 1885 all ships within each classification have been numbered sequentially based on the authorization date of the vessel, the availability of numbers, or entrance to the Royal Navy (if purchased after completion).

A –AUXILLERY (Naval Auxiliaries 1885- 1907; RFA from 1907)
B – BATTLESHIP
C – CRUISER (Protected & Armoured Cruisers 1885-1925; All Cruisers after 1925)

HMA Plover - 2003 (A312)

The Plover was laid down in 2000 as a replacement for the ageing HMS Mt Diamond, which had been the RN's helicopter training ship since 1971. The initial requirement was for a vessel capable of acting as a floating classroom for ASW training for both helicopter crews and the shipboard ASW operators, so it has facilities and equipment identical to the current destroyers and frigates in the fleet. As the Plover is not intended for any combat use, she is assigned to the RFA and is unarmed except for training rounds for the helicopters.

What's the sonar doing onboard when the ship isn't armed?

Slapu - 2004

The Buccaneer class was designed as an ASW platform by the Royal Leegesian Navy in response to the requirement for them to provide a Hunter-Killer Division to the Combined Commonwealth Defence Fleet (CCDF). As building progressed on the Buccaneer, first laid down in 1994, the RN saw the utility of these vessels and ordered a pair for themselves as well, the Kraken and Centaur, with additional orders coming from the Grayson and Salish Dominions. This is the first class of vessels with the nameship of the class in a navy other than the RN.
Each CVH has extensive Flag and ASW facilities to act as the central pivot for ASW hunter-killer groups, and these groups serve as the first line of defense against submarine threats to the Fleet, and to the Kingdom and Commonwealth.

Same reason this ship, for example, has sonar. Navigation and avoidance of uncharted underwaters thingies which if run into could ruin everybodies day. I am pretty sure that its not for ASW purposes. At least, most supertankers and MSC supply ships aren't designed for that role that I am aware of. ;)

EDIT: The role of this ship has been altered to be both helo and ASW training, so the sonar is the same as those used on the frigates and destroyers.
