My grandmother passed away recently and I as I was going through her old photos I found two pictures taken by my grandfather of HMS Vanguard and a carrier coming into Portsmouth Harbour. He was Royal Marine during WWII and served on HMS's Nelson and Howe but these are obviously after the war. I thought I'd share them with the forum and maybe someone in the know can tell me what the carrier is.

Great photos. the carrier in question must be one of the Illustrious class,but I can't be certain which ship exactly.

Great stuff Charybdis and thanks for sharing these gems.I can't be 100% but I'm pretty sure the carrier is either Indefatigable or Implacable due to the forward 4.5" sponson being deeper on the last two ships.

Thats a great map of the Coronation Fleet Review, thanks. That would have been some sight. I only saw one review in Portsmouth and that was the D-Day 50th anniversary in 1994. I could barely get to the beach, there were so many people.

Yes, just looking at the number of ships represented is amazing; mind you, a lot of these would have been partially mothballed (i.e. a lot of their guns to save manpower). That said, you'd not want to blink when the next one is held, lest you missed the RN fleet

I love that term "mothballed". I have an image in my head of a mighty battleship been eaten by a plague of hungry moths
