I think its awesome too!

Oh if only this could have been real-life...
Still Ark Royal and Eagle did sterling work as fleet carriers and doubtless the 1966 cutbacks would have turned Malta and Gibraltar into razor blades by the end of the 70s anyway. We can dream though! :ugeek:

Looking at the updated drawing I can see just how far you've evolved this; particularly the forward hull where your cunning use of shading gives the flare out from the hull to the flight deck - sublime :D I agree with the consensus that even one of these would have mad all the diference, and added weight to maintaining a credible FAA; but I keep niggling at that seperate island: why? I mean, surely one continuous island would have made more sense?

My hope would have been that when the Gibraltar class design matured the Ark Royal and Eagle would have been cancelled and 2 more Gibraltar's built to replace them.

Great works! I'd like to propose a different deck layout:
[ img ]

I think that fitting angled deck to the Malta class carriers would probably take place in the mid- to late- 1950s, I believe It would resemble changes done to HMS Victorious and Centaur class carriers:
- minor changes to the orginal design (like HMS Centaur),
- using the deck-edge lifts as a part of angled deck (like HMS Hermes)
- the angled deck would be build as a light structure, the catapults would remain in its original place (like HMS Victorious).

And it happened this layout gives more deck space than this proposed above :D

I'm not skilled with drawing, so I merged existing works. I have no rights for those designs:

HMS Hermes' deckplan for general idea:

I took some parts from HMS Eagle:

...and from Ark Royal:

Hi Crusader,

Would a '60s carrier still be carrying around so many 4.5in guns? I'm afraid I don't recall the specifics but I was under the impression that such heavy armament was increasingly being left off as mere additional weight by that sort of time.

Regards,
APDSmith

She's certainly a beast, love all the drawings of her. This has persuaded me to attempt plan views for my drawings.
