Oh, you can add Foreign Leaders of US Allies to the list of people that the US names destroyers after:
U.S.S. Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81)

Ah, but Churchill slips onto the list because he was an Officer and an American, just not an American Officer.

Edit: Oh, and technically, other than LCS-10, all of the LCSes are named after cities and towns.

How was Churchill an American?
His MOTHER was, but he was not; also, the 'Single Citizen Parent, Born Abroad' qualification only came into being recently AFIK... meaning that as Churchill was born in England and had only one parent who was a Citizen, he shouldn't be an American, technically.

Even the tradition-bound royal Navy has named ships after foreigners! It's no big deal. (Not counting HMS Washington or the three out of six HMS Americas after 1776.)

For ultimate ship name irony try "CSS United States."

Meh- I have nothing against it... I actually think it's a very appropriate name.
I'd far rather them name a ship after Sir Winston Churchill than, say, Slick Willy, Dubbya, or the Obamassiah. At least Mr. Churchill had real integrity, unyielding resolve, and unwavering courage. Sadly, I can think of no modern American politicians who have any of these qualities.

He was made an Honorary Citizen of the United States in 1963. He really gets in on a technicality.

Naming ships for foreigners is entirely appropriate if they have a connection with America and have defended American ideals.

In fact I can think of a very powerful boat named after a foreigner who has little connection with America at all, one named after a monarch, and at least three others named after foreign military leaders.

Yeah, I don't get that, that goes back to naming gunboats for cities. Y U KNO LIEK TACOMA?!

And I don't have a problem with USS Chruchill. I have a problem with USS Roosevelt because it allegedly honors two different people for two different accomplishments/things. I don't have a problem with USS The Sullivans because it honors a group of people for the same thing.

But ultimately it's just semantics. Really I guess it doesn't make a difference if they name the next GRF-carrier USS Bum&%$#.

In the future perhaps ships will have corporate sponsors!
