This is the Drum as she looked in the summer of 1945 and what she would have looked like on her 14th war patrol. She was en-route to her patrol area when the war ended and she returned to Pearl. I have been privileged to live close to were she rests now in Mobile Alabama and had a chance to take a good look at her. Unfortunately she is really showing her age ( she is the oldest Gato still in existence, launched in early 1941) and doesn't nearly look this good on the outside. Fortunately work is being done and the torpedo doors on bow and stern are being refurbished. The interior of the boat is in exe lent condition and her torpedo toob doors still fiction properly.

Hmm, not bad, but I'll wait for the experts to make their comments before I think about adding this image to my collection...

Precisely! Just take a look at ALAVAMA's USS Midway for an example of the experts commentary (including some of my own).

It looks very nice but I am worried about some of the non-standard shading and detailing, especially in the case of the railings and riggings. I can't really tell from the computer I'm on so I'll wait for Gollevainen or someone more capable to say something.

I understand and look forward to feedback. The hull color was so dark that I had to compensate for shading, the only other computer safe color being lead (basically flat black). Can you see the paint weathering and inconsistencies on the upper forward hull ok?

Ok... all the forum technical critiques aside:
This is a lovely drawing of our hometown girl! I love the treatment you have given her. There is a lot of good restoration work going on with her ATM, and it is coming along rather smartly considering there are only like 2-3 volunteers doing the work that dozens of men did to put her together in the first place.
I live across the Bay from the Girls, and love spending an evening on the pier looking at them across the water as I fish. If I could ever get a job working 3/12s I'd volunteer myself... I suck as a welder but I'm a fair hand at cutting metal and anyone can paint!!!

when you shade, be it what ever color, dry not to use more than single color in it. Don't make sort of stepped shade of two or even three shade to mock-up aliasating, since it just doesen't look good and quite is not what the shading in SB scale is supposed to be. Also, when you imply the shade (like to the lower part of the hull), try to be consistent and symmetrical with it.
