These are very sweet looking ships. The Italians did some
great designs with curved funnels and masts that looked way
ahead for their time. These ships would look fine next to Queen
Mary 2.

... and now I need Bezo's comments.

OK, I gotta ask, was there a purpose for the framework around the funnels, or was it just decorative?

I would say 'Style'. remember, these are Italian, where style was born Anyway, these are trully beautiful ships.

Precisely on all accounts.

For the most part all cruise ship funnels look like that underneath the almost purely cosmetic sheetwork most people are accustomed to (though particularly on Carnivale ships the "wing funnels" do serve a function, making sure exhaust gasses are properly vented over the deck so as not to compete with the onboard food and lack of sanitation to make people nauseous [zing!]). The latticework gives the same outline as the fairings over other cruise ships, but as to why a lattice and not a full fairing, I'm guessing it was an aesthetic choice to help set these ships apart (they're not the only cruise line to do this either).

It was in fact both aesthetic and practical! Michi and Raffi's funnels were designed around the notion to reduce pollution on the deck areas. They also were designed to minimize the actual noise 'pollution' or wind turblence that many modern passanger vessels are troubled with. One very practical gain was the reduction in top weight, and the fact that the 'cagemast'-style (or wastebasket-style as some Americans would prefer to say...) turned out to be unusually strong and rigid.

As for the bilge keel, it was indeed a very advanced design, far ahead of anything, really of its time. I was tempted to ask Lazer to try and somehow represent the very radical hull-lines of these express liners, but I know it's not SB-style. Anyway, the bilge keel is actually situated at the fullest part of the underwater hull. The forward part, in fact, just as the forward stabilisator pair begins, is radically swept inwards, creating a very sped-oriented, yet, extremely stable hull. Thus, although these Queens were intended for a service speed of 27.5 knots, we know that the Michi was able to handsomely top 32 knots without any problem; Raffi did 31.5 knots on her trials, on standard BRT!

Anyway, Lazer...MOLTO BENE!!!!!
