Yay my first ship from scratch. The fore superstructure looks odd to me, but it's the best I could do from my reference picture.
Tips, suggestions, critiques would all be welcomed.

Well um, thank you Portsmouth, now I've read that page about 8 times in the last 2 days. 6 of them having been on my own, the other 2 two as a specific reference towards something another member was trying to explain (shading).

Was there something specific there I didn't do properly?
I've followed the scale, the template, line width, colors and shading (with a few personal differences, I don't feel 'everything' should be the same color just because it's not a hull).
The only portion of that page I can think of that you might be referencing is to scour the reference pictures. I've done that in my particular case, I'll look for more of this ship, but I've gotten every detail I can make out of the reference image I used, WWII era pictures weren't always very high resolution.

I'm sorry if any of that came off rude or stand-offish, but linking me to a page without telling me what I should be learning from it, and assuming that just because I'm new I haven't read the Introduction and Guidelines thread apparently puts me in a defensive mood. I've also read the rules thread 3 times, both of the attachment threads, and the software update thread, not that the software thread was very important by this point in time.

If I'm doing something wrong, or if there's something you feel I could improve on, actually saying so would be appreciated. IE: The obvious is only obvious to those that know about it.

No worries mate; It is a bit of a challenge adapting to a new medium, and if you're here I'm assuming you want to use and contribute in SB scale and standard. I'm about to log off and begin work, but I'll see if I can source you a better drawing or picture for this ship (I thought it had been done) Meanwhile, you might like to take a cose look at some of the German navy ships done by other members - really, Gollevainen is the touch stone here, but others have as well - check out the archive and there you'll find a lot; a good source for examples. :)

WOAH there's an actual website, not just the forums. Well then, I guess that's the archive people keep talking about.
And yea, I found a Nuernberg there by Gollevainen, it looks a lot different from my reference. But it's a start.

Aha! I'd wondered about the Nurnberg, and it was done by the master. We don't have a direct link to the Archive from here; it was in the old Forum, but yes the raison detre for the current forum is primarily to provide new ships to upload onto the archive, as a reference source. I'm not sure what you mean by "its a start", in relation to Golly's drawing, as I can assure you it is accurate and representative of the ship, but you are quite welcome to carry on with your version as a learning tool. :)

Another resource you should check out are the various parts sheets for diferent countries; on these you'll find the standard items shared by other ship types: guns and directors, radars, ships boats, screws, etc. Otherwise, you'll find yourself trying to needlessly draw your own, and not as accurately.

As a learning tool is exactly what I meant :)
I'm not going to learn how to accurately make things by copy and pasting your guys' work ;) I've noticed a distinct lack of German parts though, at least in the forums threads, the actual archive may have more. But I'm trying very hard to not use them. I'm using shipbucket to learn how to design ships, not to fill an archive. And while using the parts is great for archiving, it's not so great for learning. Making them on my own, using your parts as references, helps me understand why they are the way they are. Their shape, size, positioning, etc. That helps me make my own versions of my own design later that feel real. I don't want to fill my ships with real world directors and radars, I want to fill them with 'my' directors and radars. The only exception is if I'm recreating a real world ship, but even then I'd feel better if it was all me. I get looked down on every so often on the PMG forum because I will refuse to use another person's part, even if it looks better than mine, just to save my personal opinion of my work. But if I don't enjoy what my work has become, then why should I do it at all? Outside of exact recreations, I might use the parts from here and modify them to my own tastes, but that's the most I'd settle for.
Shipbucket is a stepping stone for me, you are all very knowledgeable and I could learn a ton from you guys, which is what I plan to do, but I'll use what I learn elsewhere eventually. As you said in the other thread, I'm a good artist. I'm just... being considerate I suppose, and using your medium while I'm here learning from you.

I suppose part of my feeling that not making things myself is degrading comes from being so dedicated to PMG. It spent years as being shunned by the art community because too much of it was seen as just copying the original program. Those of us that were leading the PMG community took great pride in making things on our own, not using the parts provided to us, or skillfully modifying and combining those parts into new things. Using a part and not modifying it to personal taste is almost taboo for us. Everything in that thread where I posted my work in PMG was made either with "preset" gun parts provided to us by the program, or basic shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles. But the triangles were only given to us a few months ago. And we couldn't just use squares like pixels because the program runs in flash, using a long text code for every part and shape in use. Too many lines of code and the program will crash from the strain. I know, I've pushed it that far several times lol.
But enough of my rambling, I'm sorry.
