I think I've gotten the hang of using pixels, so I'll go ahead and make a ship from scratch next, but here's what I did for practice.

New Britannia is a nation in a forum based turn based strategy game I'm in, my nation of course. We don't get into as much history and detail as most of you guys do with your AUs. I felt a french destroyer would be a nice platform to learn on since Brtiannia has been occupying France for a few decades now. But I'll get back to the ship, torpedoes haven't been widely used in our game, why I don't know, so I'm not super worried about torpedo boats, nor do I feel torpedoes are needed on my own ships. So instead I've turned the destroyer into a quick response, patrol and rescue vessel, leaving a separate and more heavily armed class for capital ship defense.

I don't know if I've left enough space in the aft for all the engine equipment, I "could" swap the new cabins and the funnels, but if I don't need to I like the looks better this way. And in hindsight, Brezobrazov's flag doesn't quite look right on here... flags are going to give me a horrible time. And now that I'm looking at the original right next to mine, I apparently have a text option somewhere in photoshop I need to change because my text is rather bold... but it's not bolded and it's set to 14px/10px as per the template...

While getting used to the medium, I was also getting used to concepts, is this type of ship a hopeless idea? Or could I be on to something interesting?

For comparison, here's Jabba's original:

You won't have the three funnels together since there will be no space for the boilers and turbines.

The guns should work fine, but I'm not certain the open bridge will be able to support a director.
As you can see on the drawing below, your new boiler and turbine arrangement won't work. Turbines are yellow and boilers are purple. Shafts are green.

The increased topweight from the new massive funnels won't do you any favours either.

Hmmm, how about if I drop to 2 funnels, keeping them larger than the originals, move them back to the original position, and put the cabin right above the turbines then?
And could changing the angle of the shafts change the position of the turbines significantly? For some reason I was thinking the turbines would still fit behind the boilers but I was thinking crazy thoughts when I came up with that.
The second spotlight would be better off in the rear anyway I suppose, I can just merge the new cabin with the old one. And I was really second guessing the director, I'll drop it.
And by dropping the 1 thinner funnel, would that bring the total funnel weight back to being acceptable? I'll also space them out a little more.

Looks pretty good to me. Prop is a little crooked on the shaft but drawing angled props is rather tricky to do I've found.
Even though the original has them, if it were me I would remove some of those portholes as they are all weaknesses in the vessels structure.

I'm not sure if I should have a new thread for this, but I'll put it here anyway as it's my first 'from scratch' ship.

Sheer, the freeboard of the forwards might want to be increased slightly in order to improve sea keeping

Shadings a bit odd, it appears like the hull has a curve at deck level and and at the waterline. doesn't seem quite right

http://shipbucket.com/forums/viewtopic. ... &f=5#p8267, explains it better than I

Oh derp, I was using a black and white reference picture, that should be the hull, not a shade.
But you'll have to explain your first sentence, I don't know what half those words actually mean o.o

My reference btw.

Ah.. your basing it off/drawing a RL ship, it doesn't matter that much. Sheer is the rise of the hull's height above the water(freeboard)
