I think I've gotten the hang of using pixels, so I'll go ahead and make a ship from scratch next, but here's what I did for practice.

New Britannia is a nation in a forum based turn based strategy game I'm in, my nation of course. We don't get into as much history and detail as most of you guys do with your AUs. I felt a french destroyer would be a nice platform to learn on since Brtiannia has been occupying France for a few decades now. But I'll get back to the ship, torpedoes haven't been widely used in our game, why I don't know, so I'm not super worried about torpedo boats, nor do I feel torpedoes are needed on my own ships. So instead I've turned the destroyer into a quick response, patrol and rescue vessel, leaving a separate and more heavily armed class for capital ship defense.
I don't know if I've left enough space in the aft for all the engine equipment, I "could" swap the new cabins and the funnels, but if I don't need to I like the looks better this way. And in hindsight, Brezobrazov's flag doesn't quite look right on here... flags are going to give me a horrible time. And now that I'm looking at the original right next to mine, I apparently have a text option somewhere in photoshop I need to change because my text is rather bold... but it's not bolded and it's set to 14px/10px as per the template...
While getting used to the medium, I was also getting used to concepts, is this type of ship a hopeless idea? Or could I be on to something interesting?
For comparison, here's Jabba's original:
