I realize my US history is rather spotty, but wasn't last time the US fought for its existence during the American Civil war 150 years ago?
Well, we were likely fighting for our existence in WWII- though it was somewhat preemptive, as Germany and Japan would have needed decades to rebuild to the point that they could have challenged an 'awakened' US post-WWII.
