No directors in WWI. If so, very primitive compared to what you might be looking for. You need spotting towers. Try looking at contemporary French or Italian ships to see those.

Sr.Gopher, there were directors even before the outbreak of WW1, some of them not at all unsophisticated!

Oh, I was mostly under that impression because I saw no research being done to put them to sea during WWI. I also can't seem to figure out what they looked like...
