Now we hear the captain 'fell' into one of the lifeboats (his words). This morning BBC replayed an exchange between the captain and the coast guard rescue operation; it is strong stuff, the coast guard officer is basically ordering him back onto the ship to help with the evacuation. I'm also in agreement with Dreadnought on the safety of these floating hotels; also, the logic of sharing with thousands of other landlubbers, with not much in the way of proper supervision. One ongoing concern is the number of 'disapearances' and crimes committed on these ships, without the corresponding security (that is not biased heavily against passengers). We can have in effect a town of up to 8,000 people, without much in the way security compared to a real town on terra firma.

Yea indeed. I saw it too. Quite hard comments, but then we have too say it's all fairly true.

Absolutely. This guy is 'God' on board, and we all know that; so the responsibility is all his, and he gets paid for it. Considering the number of dead and missing, and the risk of pollution, he has a lot to answer for.

Having seen the maps, the course picked isn't deep enough for the side draft of the ship. The centerline was deep enough for the draft, but not the rest of the path.

It's a case of a square peg in a round hole.

What happened is beyond any possible fiction!
The captain, the second and the third officers were on the lifeboat around midnigth with most of the peopke still onboard.
Moreover between the impact and the order to leave the ship passed more than 1 hour...

PS: the oil recovery will be managed by a dutch company, the Smit

Basically, this is a case of negligence on the part of every officer on the bridge at the time of the incident.

Even this crazy little Alabama cracker- a river rat of the Southron variety- can read that chart; and though I have never skippered anything that drew more than 36" of water at the foot of the outboard, I can most clearly see that this ship would wind up finding the bottom the hard way.
Given the proximity of some very distinguishable landmarks and at least one visible light... they'll have a lot of explaining to do in court.
