Behold the wonders of the Cold War USN training program!

[ img ]

Originally a β…”rds scale model of a Destroyer Escort, USS Recruit was commissioned in 1949. In 1967 she went from being TDE-1 to Building 430 when the computerized catalog of USN ships couldn't take a ship with now engines, no screws, no crew, wasn't at sea, wasn't tied up to a pier, wasn't in dry dock, and wasn't in mothballs. In 1982 she received an overhaul that replaced structures and systems with those found on a Perry Class frigate.

More pictures to come as a process them.

By the way, she's mine to draw. :P

I've got some pictures that I haven't processed. Alas, I don't have a single picture side view.

For those curious, and at least according to Wikipedia, USS Recruit was modeled after a Dealey-class escort, which at the time was state-of-the-art (keep in mind this was after WWII, even). The "ship" replaced another structure, "USS Commodore" that was something of a cross between a Clemson and an Eagle Boat that was used through WWII. There was another "Recruit" that was a functioning mock-up of a typical battleship (only three twin turrets with wood "rifles") during WWI in the middle of Times Square no less.

Now they use a mock-up of a Burke at the Naval Academy itself.
