Got bored while driving home from school and this is what happened.
It's based on a Swedish peasant weapon called a Swordstaff.
As the name suggest it was adopted by the RDN in 1796 and it proved to be murderously effective both on land and aboard ships.
It's still retained as a ceremonial weapon.

On a ship it's perfect. A full-sized pike would just get in the way.
