This looks really interesting. I thought I had seen all the IJN subs

coastal defense.
Well, you might have seen all the Imperial Japanese Navy submarines ;) ... this submarine and her sisters were operated by the Imperial Japanese Army! They were not warships, and are not armed beyond the 37mm deck gun; they are the mysterious Maru-Yu class submarine transport. They were used to smuggle goods through dangerous waters to island garrisons... and are very hard to find details on. I know there is an article in Warships International (3rd Qtr of 1999) that has an article on them, but I can find precious little else about them!

After the post by WhyMe and his additional pics, I managed to go through and pick out a few more details, get the cranes to look right and put them in the right places, change the wires a bit, and make a few other general changes that get things looking more accurate. So, a special THANK YOU to WhyMe on this one- because I had looked straight at those darn cranes in all four of my pics and never recognized what they were!

Here's the final version, and accurately labeled as Yu-03, as she would have looked in service in 1943 (after capture, she was displayed at Mare Island Shipyard during June and July of 1945).

Nice work on another of those lesser-known vessels.

Sorry... missed that.
Whoops.
Not much difference between the Type 2 and Type 4... at least the Type 10 hadn't been done. :)
