As in the baseline, a single MCLWG replaced the forward 5-in gun. ASROC reloads were cut from 24 to 12-16 to add volume for the larger gun and its magazine.
This ties in later to:
Friedman on page 454 wrote:
A Spruance could accommodate a 29 round vertical launcher in place of her ASROC, and the 8-in gun (with 336 rounds) could replace here forward 5-in/54
He also talks about LST and Knox class LFS refits. Note the magazine sizes relative to the Mk-42's standard 599 round magazine.
Friedman on page 452 wrote:
In the simplest Knox-class LFS conversion, the 5-in/54 gun was replaced by a 155mm vertically loaded gun with 600 rounds, and a digital (hence more adaptable) Mk 86 or Mk 92 fire control system replaced the earlier analog Mk 68. Alternatively, in the second conversion option an 8-in/36 with 500 rounds could replace the 5-in gun; in the third option it could be replaced by a 9-in rocket launcher with 350 rounds. Nothing more could be done, because it as important that the Knox class retain the ASW capability represented by ASROC, which occupied the only other available launcher position.
He elaborates on the 155mm gun later and gives this intriguing line:
Friedman on page 452 wrote:
There was some expectation, too, that the 155-mm gun could be adapted to other rolls, such as ASW (e.g., to fire sonobuoys and hydrostatically fused shells, which are in effect, depth bombs).

More on the 9" rocket.....
Friedman on page 449-450 wrote:
Among the proposals selected for further study was a naval version of Vought's Army MRLS 9-inch rocket launcher; the rockets would carry bomblets. MRLS, at the time called MARS (multiple army rocket system) had been rejected for the naval fire support role in 1970.

So the Navy has already looked at all this stuff? How serious was the investigation into this? Is it on par with Flight Deck Sprucan, or more serious?

These were studies commissioned by the Navy and carried out by the Center for Naval Analyses so I'd rank these a lot higher than the various flight deck Spruances (other than Hayler).

I'm assuming, then, the 155-deployed Depth Bombs and Sonabouys would be fired with far less than a FSC, to prevent them from breaking up when they hit the water at high velocity?

I have no clue. My first guess is that they would have a chute to slow them down.

If I'm not mistaken the study came about when the last proper bombardment ship the USS Carronade was scrapped.

There were a variety of studies in the late 1960s and early 1970's. Most of the ones involving the Spruance and Knox classes were done in a second batch of studies done in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

just rereading this..... a few questions are rising
- what could have been that 29 cell vertical launcher on the sprucan? an mk 41 VLS or another system?
- any details on that MLRS/MARS system? I couldn't even find the land based one... :$

1. It's a 32 cell Mk-41 with a crane taking up three cells.
2. I've turned the book back in to the library, but there was not a lot of info other than that it was the standard MRLS rocket, and that there was a modified Mk-16 as the launcher (rocket diameter of 9" would probably mean that you could keep a minimum of 12 rockets in the launcher instead of the 8 15" RUR-5s).
