I'm not sure it's a rifle, because it is an old muzzle loader, what is also to be seen with the trigger arrangement (in fact it is not a trigger as we are used to, but I don't know what it is called in english!)

You're talking about a serpentine lock but that's not it. Although it indeed appears to be a muzzle loader, the trigger group is more likely to be a flint lock or a cap lock.

Yes, I have seen these and others example, but my choice of gun was decided of the fact that most of the memorabilia were showing the very old gun. I could only find two photos (the two you've got here) showing a rifle.

Thank you Kim for the crest; and whatever you decide on re the rifle will be acceptable and much appreciated. I guess it would be a flintlock as a reminder of the Battle of Oriskany.

Forwardlooking I will prefer discussions of such details will be via PM's. It's very fine to find five examples showing one kind of muskets, but I don't think it's very constructive, that I then show 20 showing the other type Anyway, I've studied the story about the Battle of Oriskany and in that perspective I will agree with WhyMe that it should be a flint-lock musket. ASAP the badge will be changed

I'm very pleased to announce that TurretHead will be taking the helm from now on with this project: completing the USS Oriskany, including a plan view; also, making his own AU version.
I'll be glad to help with any references, and of course, I know we'll all contribute advice should he require it. And of course, we have Kim's excellent badge finally to grace the finished drawing

I’m more than happy to finish off Bill’s Oriskany side view (hardly anything to be done) and combine it with my top view (about 33% done). Because the Essex’s have not had much coverage and the great new standard set by the RN carrier drawings I intend on making this a complete study. In order of schedule I will draw:

# USS Oriskany with SCB-125A and NTDS modernization and empty deck; right side and plan view. Uploading a draw with an empty deck will make it easier for all the AU kit bashing.

# USS Oriskany with SCB-125A and NTDS modernization and 1970 air wing (F-8s and A-7s); right side and plan view.

Also to leverage this drawing and show the transformation of the Essex class I will also draw:

# USS Intrepid in 1944 as built for WWII service; right side and plan view.
# USS Intrepid in 1955 with SCB-27C modernization; right side and plan view.
# USS Intrepid in 1959 with SCB-125 modernization; right side and plan view.
# USS Intrepid in 1962 as an ASW carrier; right side and plan view.
# USS Intrepid in 1966 as a Vietnam deployed auxiliary attack carrier; right side and plan view.

These drawings will show the WWII, early 1950s jet, late 1950s jets, ASW air wing (Trackers) and early Vietnam air wing. There are more options to draw like intrepid as a Mercury recovery ship or as the museum in New York. Plus Essex class in Korea and a what-if Operation Downfall 1946. Plus of course other what ifs like the RAN Essex proposals and the 1980s Reagan modernization.

My schedule is to get the above ships and air wings drawn before Christmas.

Well this is good news, and something to look forward to. I must confess to having the equivalent of writers block on this project, and I got tired of Davey Jones visiting me at night with clanking chains, lamenting that the good ship Oriskany was not at rest knowing old PB was slacking in the paint locker But TurretHead will do justice to her and I'm providing lots of reference material
