before the standard frigates (kortenaer class) emerged, a lot of proposals were made. of these concepts very little is known, but I managed to find enough information on at least some of them to draw them. these will be placed on this topic.

fregat 75
The van Speijk class (dutch leander) was known for good seakeeping qualities. These were important for the new frigate, so initially the RLNL worked with these ships as base. In 1970 they finished the design of an 2-prop ship with steam propulsion and an (full load) displacement of 3000 tons. Arnament consisted of the 120mm guns of the A/B destroyers, guided weapons against air and sea targets and 2 tripple torpedo tubes. Radars were the LW and ZW radars and the WM-25 fire control system.
This fregat was called the Fregat 75 (frigate 1975)

Maybe change the lynx to a Wasp, or, at least add one as an alternative?

no. the lynx was used from 1976 onwards, so there is no reason why they would add the wasp for only one year (if this ship would really be finished in 1975, the plans were for 'the end of the 1970's ' )

Ah, the old Leander design had some potential for sure. The Dutch and Indians certainly got every last ounce of the basic design.
In many ways though this is still the basic Leander concept, one twin main gun mount, short-range SAM and the modern SSM replacing the old ASW technology of the Leander. Overall perhaps a dated concept for 1970 for the later 70s. Nice drawing though.

you are correct hood! this concept was not build because there was not enough space for future development and upgrades.

Looking at it i do see a lot off options for follow-up batches! Goalkeeper and heavier SAM's instead of the gun or something like that!

Great design! Great drawn.

patrol frigate / OHP Class

and this was another concept. the dutch looked at the USN Patrol Frigate (which would lead to the perry) twice, one time rather early in the project and one time just before the final design was selected. this one is as late in the project, where the basic shape would be decided by the USN already. I will do another one where the RNLN had some influence in the design soon.

this design was not chosen because the dutch navy did not want to use an single prop ship, and because these ships would enter service too late.

btw, an question to the US members here.... where there other arrangements considered for the perry? if the dutch jumped in early in the project (and maybe others too) there might have been chosen an different layout, for example with an gun on the bow.... any intel on such possibilities?

I'll post more later when I have Friedman at hand.
  • Standard was the main driver for the design. ASW was distinctly secondary.
  • Early on, ASROC and SQS-23 were part of the design. The former was considered unnecessary when a second helicopter was added. The latter was removed for, IIRC, cost reasons. I'll check on that. Zumwalt was very very picky with prices on these ships. Presumably if ASROC had stayed, the GMLS would have been the Mk 26 Mod 1 (44 weapons).
  • To indicate the completely secondary nature of the gun, originally the gun armament was to be a 35mm (single or twin, don't remember). 76mm was only added when the design had a slight weight margin, as the mounts were similar in cost. Clearly the whole design would not be allowed to grow or change to have a gun forward, as this would also interfere with the Mk 13 field of fire.
  • Single screw was forced by desire for low cost, and for most efficient operation at around 20 knots in a COGAG arrangement (cruising with one of two turbines with two screws would either require complicated and failure-prone cross-connect gear or would require the trailing of one shaft).
  • GAAAGH STOP FITTING SEA SPARROW TO SHIPS WITH STANDARD NOBODY HAS EVER DONE THIS IN REAL LIFE EVER
