We all remember what happened on the 11th September 2001, but most people doesn't realize that during the nine hours that followed more than half a million people where evacuated via boat from lower Manhattan.
It wasn't planned and all organization was done on the fly from the bridge of Pilot no. 1 as events unfolded.

It was. I'm using my phone and the dictionary isn't cooperating.
Anyway, just to give a sense of scale it took the allies nine days to evacuate some 340,000 troops from Dunkirk

Ah, same problem on mine (confusing ship with dip)

They do have massive ferries though but again it's a massive effort and those involved deserve a medal
