Indigenous missile design for the emirates, the S.S. 15 Tyrfing ship to ship missile
[ img ]
Using an automatic loading twin turret on large ships, and a fixed double box launcher on smaller corvettes and patrol vessels, the S.S. 15 is a medium range anti-ship missile. It uses the same guidance system as the termit missile, which is already present on multiple Emirates vessels.

What do people think?

Also, initial attempts at the aircraft of the Emirates air force. Any thoughts?

Personally I'd say keep the MiG-21s in the interceptor role but take them up to M standard. I say this namely because the Su-15 was never exported but the MiG-21... Well yeah. The roles for Bear and Backfire sort of overlap somewhat. The Il-38 or something similar to it would be a better option for naval patrol. You could then use the Bear in the bombing role or scrap the Bear and keep the Backfire. Given that the USSR doesn't exist in this AU I still think the above is a better idea. Also limits the amount of types you have to operate when you have two or more systems doing the same job.

For me I could imagine operating the MiG-21 and Su-7 (then moving over to the MiG-23 and MiG-27) for my front line fighters/fighter bombers. Tu-16s for my bombers (if the country was big enough to warrant having a dedicated heavy bomber force). Il-18/38s for maritime patrol, cargo, refueling, EW/C3 etc.

I'm thinking of having this as a transitional period. The Bear and the Boot are being taken out in favour of an increased fleet of Backfires (maybe 60-70). Can the Backfire do C3, or should I keep bears for that? Or have a specialised aircraft?

As for fighters... I'm not happy with the Mig-21's capabilities... But maybe I'll have to wait a few years for an upgrade to the fighter fleet. Maybe the Mig-23 will be brand new. A couple of new ones appearing as a test aircraft...

Then, by 1980, I think Fighter will be the Mig-23, attack will be the Mig-27, and Bomber will be the Tu-22... A completely swing winged air force...

The Bear has one thing over the Backfire, the bear has one of the longest ranges of any aircraft.

For C³ you're probably going to have a more substantial crew than four or five. So the backfire may suffer somewhat in that respect. The bear isn't really idea either as the fuselage is quite narrow and cramped Hence my saying the Il-18/38. Regarding the fighter situation, give the MiG-21 an MLU to keep it current until sufficient MiG-23s or any other replacement fighter come on-line. For instance with Atlantia I operated the Saab 35 Draken throughout the 1970s (1969-1980) it's replacement in the form of the Saab 37 came from 1973 onwards (in service until 2007 in the EW role) Although the Draken fleet was being drawn down they would of still been in front line service until until there were sufficient numbers of Viggens available to replace them or at least supplant them in the most important role. The Drakens received a SLEP in 1974 integrating BVRAAMs and newer radar which kept them reasonably current.

Il-18 sounds like a plan then...

What I have now is the Mig-23 appearing in 1973, with the Mig-21 staying in service until probably around 78. The Mig-23 is gonna get air to ground mods in 75 I think, which'll make it look something like the Mig-27...

MiG-23BNs would make sense then.

Currently having a go at a future cruiser program... To replace the old WW2 mods currently in service.

EDIT: anyone got an IL-38 anywhere? I cant find one...

I thought I would show of this. It's one cruiser proposal to replace the Oberon class, which are getting a bit old (30 years by the time of building). It's also one of the first hulls to use the indigenous SSM system.
It's not done yet obviously, but I'm working on it :D. Another missile system aft me thinks...I'm not sure.
