A ferry went ashore last night here in Norway.

When it was put into operation on 1 June this year, sent the ferry company Fjord1 out a press release stating that the MF Eiksund is "the first ship in the world with peripheral-driven azimuth thrusters and operation via electrical shaft".

easy! 1000+++tonns amd 11-15 knots in a long-shallow area... but my main problem is to understand how they managed to miss the pier by 400 meters!

Here you have a picture of the area of the ferry ran aground.
the top blue marker shows the direction the ferry comes from.
the lower blue marker on the left shows where the ferry pier is.
the blue marker on the right shows where it ran aground (470m) :? :o

400m is a pretty big miss, excellent map though!

but the craziest ferry accident was in 2006 when the ferry: "Melshorn" had driven almost through the pier, around 04.00 in the night!

Similar to the Ozone, here in Australia, was going too fast and split the pier with her thin bow
