I did a bit of digging and came-up with this.
When the Sydeny came into service, it was equipped with 2 Supermarine Sea Otters for rescue duties. They weren't a part of any squadron and operated as apart of the ships flight. They were removed at the start of the Korean war.
USN operated H-5 Sikorsky Seafly (S-51) was operated as the plane guard. The first ever helicopter to operated from an Australian warship. At the conclusion of the war the RAN bought the Bristol Sycamore for SAR.
