Hi guys,

This may trigger some new ideas for AU's. It is a movie that resembles a documentary that follows the events leading to the 3rdw world war. The plot starts with glasnost in 1989 and continues with the fictional third world war from March 12 to April 1, 1990. Very interesting to see!

Something actually came upon me to watch the whole film. It was actually quite interesting with how a simple, minor turn of events could have made waves, and all this before the failed August 1991 coup which was basically the death knell for the USSR as it was known. The events of violence beginning in Eastern Europe known as the "Chinese Solution" grimly parallel some of what is going on in the Middle East.

Just a few quips, I've been wondering how much of that footage was actual but re-dubbed and put in new context and how much was (very well I might add) scripted. All of the footage looked very real to the point that it was almost frightening. How did they get George HW Bush Sr (and others) to do all those live shots (I could be mistaken but that looked very much like the real dude)? Sure some of it could have been taken out of context but some of the speeches he made in there I cannot possibly seem to put into a real-life context. It was surely made to look more real than most of what even big-time Hollywood cranks out today with special effects, considering that some of that footage (such as the soldier firing directly over the Berlin Wall) could not have possibly been real (if that was an actual incident I'd appreciate someone pointing it out to me). Also, what's up with the US soldiers still using the old M1 covers and Vietnam-model AR's, when we started using PASGT and such in the early 80's?

This is a pretty cool compilation of training films, real documentaries, shopped photographs and staged scenes. Although it's obviously an amateurs' work and the story line is sort of naive but the job they made researching for materials, editing (especially the battle scenes), dubbing and acting deserves respect.

There was a very good made docu by the german ZDF, called WW3, too. Beginning was Glasnost/Gorbi failing, some abusing following, naval conflicts at atlantic and finally a soviet invasion of Germany. After failure of all diplomatics, nukes follow. After 120 minutes of escalation the movie stopps and shows the real history in short flashbacks.
As a child of cold war I was reminded of many many historic facts while viewing that movie.
And I remembered how often we were damned near to make that fiction real.

I think the one you mentioned is the exact same one this thread is about.

Then we all have a good taste...

Seriously, I was really impressed about it. The younger ones of you might not know how it feels to grow up in a split country. To visit the family you had to cross a boarder more a frontline, pass harsh controls surrounded by minefields and machineguns. And you knew, making one fault or saying one dumb word would give you some interesting hours with some ungracious men.
I think all have at least heard about that. But to see it live and experience that is another thing. I was lucky to live in western Germany.
Can you imagine how lucky we were, when the concrete walls fell, the terror regime of DDR was gone, cold war was over? Somehow over night?

The movie shows what could have happened instead. That's why I am impressed.

Thank god it ended peacefully however, seeing this made me think about the small chance of a nasty outcome and rather glad we didn't have that outcome play out
