Sounds very much like a small light cruiser to me.
And I doubt you're going to get 42kts out of them, no matter what you do.
That's why people like you come in, I'm not an expert, but try to make it as good as I can. Then you/others just say what I have to fix.

I think I should maybe go down to 2in instead of 4in.

Speed: maybe a little fast for its time!

Rhade You're absolutely right in that. I should maybe write it in mind that not everyone who understands that a battleship carries escort vessels with them. I thought everyone knew that.

such as "G 334" it fooled a battleship into a minefield, it's of course also destroyer-escort for her too but the main goal of any strength, and something that will look good in the papers of any captain is that they managed to destroy a larger vessel.

Everyone knew about everything ... and in most cases they know nothing. ;)
This captain fool whole battleship battlegroup ... they will promote him, give him a medal, big statue and make movie about him. :D
Give this story more dramatic background, like Commander John Sheridan against "Black Star" or Commander Ernest E. Evans against Japanese Center Force. ;)

The speed is not unrealistic at all, French destroyer Fantasque could reach briefly 45 knots (!) but on the other hand she had no armor and very light armament

In every military unit there is always a officer who is a bit better than others!

General Patton
Horatio Nelson
etc.

I know, there is many prominent warriors in history. Your captain fool whole battlegroup, what his name ? don't make some forgotten hero. Make him BIG! a national hero, your more modern ship can bear his name. HELL!!! the whole class ... like Admiral Arleigh Albert '31-knot' Burke. ;)

if some ship goes 43 knots it doesent equal automatically that the other would too.
to jump in speed from something under 30 knot to 43 knot would require huge ammount of reworking not for just boilers but for the turbines and the shaft/propellors as well. I would be intressed to hear in which sort of machinery powers and boiler pressures such speed increase would be achieved here ;)

What about the name: John F. Smith, later nicknamed "The D-man"!
