I'm new here, and although I have neither the skill
nor the software to create some great warship
profiles, I rely on this group to help me fill in the
blanks on warship design and appearance.

I read 45 -50 military history books each year, and am
starting to build 1/700th scale model warships.

Why do Shipbucket rules require the hulls to be fire
engine red? This seems overly bright for the navies
that painted their hulls red, and glaringly inaccurate
for the navies that painted their hulls some other
color like green or black.

when the hull is black in reality, it is black in sb as well.... why it is that teint of red I don't know, but I know that the antifouling paint on smaller ships is quite bright as well. other members have to reply to the rest of the questions, because I'm not sure about it ;)

It's stylized, just like the oversized windows and so on. It doesn't have to be red, Golly has posted a bunch of Ruski ships with green bottom paint and I've posted a few with black. However, most navies uses red bottom paint, but finding out the exact shade is pretty much impossible in many cases so we just go for a basic red.

As for drawing programs, technically, all you need is MS Paint, though personally I prefer Paint.NET since it has layer support and a bunch of other nice features. The only drawback I've run into so far is that it can't handle truly massive pictures.
I had a hard time trying to resize the blueprints of the Willemoes, since they were some 37 thousand pixels wide and half again as long.

1. It's the standard red selectable in MSPaint. Next time we'll pick a really obscure red color that's only usable in Adobe Photoshop CS5.

2. It's stylized.

3. It just is. Don't ask these sorts of questions since this style was basically plopped down before any of us were members. By now there are something like 3000 drawings on the site and to go back and correct all 3000 of them with the proper hull colors is frankly not worth the effort.

Most of the "modern" units are red... But how define red?
Some icebreakers are having white or black hulls and within SB very light or very dark grey is used.
Russian navy is mainly using green hulls nowaday while Italian Navy used it from ww1 till ww2 and then changed into red...
Much more complex is the hull colors for ships before ww1:some were having darker red and,as i found recently, Austrhungaran Navy was using dark grey hulls.BTW ithere is a general reccomandation to use red (255,0,0) as basic color if there is no specific (documented) color.

I agree that the red is quite strong, but I'm assuming it is a red-oxide that is close to the appearance when freshly painted; and for the same reason we don't (now) show rust streaks, barnacles etc. The main thing is to have a Shipbucket style and we are expected to adhere to it. It makes things easier and keeps us from wasting the time of the admin team in judging members individual styles.

It all comes into one word "STYLE". All drawings are in Shipbucket style and so the fire engine red and haze grey. Mind you there are a few exception, as mentioned above.
As for the tools, there are but three, one the drawing tool, which can be MS Paint, Paint.Net or Photoshop, tool tow is your willingness to embark on the road, and tool three is the referance material, which in your case you have enough
