Yep. That's something I'm moving toward in this subforum as it will make everyone's lives easier.

Anyhow, in your template the data is represented pretty poorly: the vertical lines visually split it up which makes it much more difficult to read and edit. For example in order to add a little bonus info such as a class name you had to use smaller font and cramp it down in two or three lines. The wide column for the ship name is going to be 90% empty for 90% of crests.

Now, compare it to my sketch: one crest, one ship name in big font - these are the two things that matter the most. No vertical lines so the history of the crest is easy to read. And even with a log history there's always enough room underneath it to squeeze a bonus mini-crest and/or other info.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm not picking on your design and I don't mean to criticize it just because I'm a little snobbish on the topic.
I'm just trying to make it look better for everyone because this project of yours really might turn into a huge heraldic guide so it needs to be planned through from the beginning. Besides, I have some experience designing user interfaces and representing all kinds of data so my opinion is more or less professional ;)
I'm sorry I have to correct you. Have you ever tried to search of any of the crest? In fact I've had created this so it actually works. When I use the search function here I can find each of the represented crest in this thread ;)

Suggestion: No more than two CoAs wide on an image.

Edit: And definitively not any wider than three.
My first edition was only two CoA's wide but when I shrinked the template I made this three-wide. I'm myself doubtful if it's too wide or if I should go back to two. Please give me some feed back ;)

Huh, you're right; looks like the search engine looks at the image file names as well. Well, one problem less :)
Would you please comment on the rest of my post though? What are your thoughts?

Because most already have the text. One thing to consider is spliting the thread into two threads like Planebucket. One thread is the CoAs with text lables (and image Labels), the other with sources, requests, critiques, ect.

I've posted an excample of the Royal Danish Navy. I think it will provide a better look of the idea, and then indirect answer you :D

What about ships that has had several designations? The Huitfelt is a good excample of this. Throughout its career it was designated as a torpedo boat, a coastal destroyer, a patrol destroyer and a patrol boat.

Thiel have you looked at the HDMS Huitfeldt part? I have these designated roles on it, but remember the danish crest became first approved in 1958 and official in 1959. Therefore vessels before that period will not be represented although their succeeders are.

True, but it's hardly the only ship to get re-designated throughout their career.

I have moved this post - and updated it - to CoA parts sheet for the Royal Danish Navy
