mitch, could you explain me why the bridge would give better coverage for the CIWS? there is maybe an slight extra angle to the rear, but 180 degrees is reached (there is only one CIWS, btw) and even more, because the bridge 'bends' a bit to the back, instead of being entirely straight.

This gives me an idea (I think it's pretty much the same as what Mitchell wanted):

[ img ]
(EDIT: Forgot to attach the image)

Bottom is the current bridge layout, top is the new one with CIWS on top. The bridge is extended to compensate for the space lost because of the CIWS. Don't know if I got the scale right. Anyways, space in the bridge isn't really reduced as drastically, it seems.

Why am I still pursueing this idea? Because this grants an angle of fire greater then 180 degrees. Considering the other CIWS has an angle this great too, this grants overlapping fire and eliminates any weak spots in the CIWS design. Plus because it is taller it can fire over the bow. Or so I think; correct me if I'm wrong. At least, this was the intention with the original Anghellis.

Below the bridge is the command structure; that can be extended as well, I suppose.

Leaves only a single thing that might be a problem, possibly; maintenence. I have no clue about that in this case.

Btw, Mitchel, to get a 360 degree arc of fire the CIWS would have to be at the highest point, on top of the tallest mast. I can see that would be a bit tricky for maintenence crews.

It does bring a couple of other problems with it since you'll have to find a new place for all the stuff normally carried up there.

And what should that be?
Since at EVERY ship in the Dutch navy (Exept the OPV Holland class atm, who has its commando centre there) has junk up there.
M frigates has a hallway with a toilet.
LCF's have a Goalkeeper room (Without goalkeeper, it is just unused space, evertsen has the goalkeeper).
S/l frigates same as M.
Gw frigates, they dont got space there, exept for the broomstick and card room.

So...

Oh I don't know, SatComms, foghorn, nav radar, radio antennas, the odd bit of ECM equipment, a few nav lights, the captains deck chair and so on and so forth.

Satcom is big yes, but is mostly a deck lower.
Navigation equipment is very very small, can be in apar radar rooms
Radio antennas is mostly on H deck
ECM equipment is in APAR tower aswell
Captain doesnt have to be there, can also be a deck lower.

Just to be clear, I'm talking about the Monkey Island, IE the space on top of the bridge, not the bridge it self.

I'll just wait with making any further additions until you guys are sure it'd be possible or not. Okay?

Space on top of the bridge shoulnd be a issue.
The Internet.television. satcom telephone can be on the hangar, or behind the APAR mast on a sponson...
Ciws can be on top, WITH the navigation (Civil and miltairy, can be put next each other).
HF /UHF isnt an issue to, and NDS (Nuclear-Detection-System) can be put next to it, it aint big. And doesnt require much space underneath (Exept wires, and for Militairy Navi you need a tube, for like 5cm thick).

ECM can be on top of APAR (The Receiver), and Transmitter in front of the bridge, or leave it out in total.
