With piracy in Somalia constantly rising, would it be more effective to replace the current UN and NATO task forces with a UN/NATO system of organized convoys? Against pirates, all the escort needed would be a single quick, lightly armed corvette or frigate. If each country contributed 1 ship to escort a convoy, a sizeable amount could be organized. If pirates did attack, they would be destroyed by the escorting ship.

That's exactly what they are doing down there. Unfortunately there simply aren't enough warships available to cover all the shipping going through there.

Convoys significantly reduce the total tonnage that can be transported by a given number of ships in given time period. With the low margins that exist in global shipping, the convoy system wouldn't be financially viable.

Edit: The Convoy system as most people think of it (WW2 style massed convoys) wouldn't be financially viable.

First of, it's not BS, secondly it wouldn't help, in fact it might just make it worse.
The crews that resist are invariably treated far more harshly than the ones that comply. So far there has been no fatalities as far as I'm aware, but plenty of people have been beaten to within an inch of their lives on board ships that tried to resist the pirates.

I would like to qualify this:
No-one has been killed, who wasn't a pirate. Plenty of Pirates have been shot, and while that is spot on, the more we kill, the angrier the Somali's (sic) will get.

Pretty much.
Experience has taught us that if you put in defences you have to be damn sure they work, because you'll be even more screwed if they don't.

This above is good.
If we want to upgun and try to stop the Somali's, we have to stop them dead rather than doing a half assed job of it. Any of them get through, and all of a sudden you have a big bunch of martyr's and people following them.
(Well, I say this, I'm not sure what the Somali psychology is like. Would they be more encouraged by the victorious death of compatriots, or by success and money)
