Not as bad as the millennium missile, the Sidewinder.

But on topic, wouldn't the new hulls be, well, new? Presumably the flight IV and possibly III (idk) would incorporate stealth features, making it a viable combatant.

The big difference between a Burke and a sidewinder in this situation is that the Sidewinders mission is unlikely to change in that timeframe.
Not so for the Burke.

It should also be noted that once you open it up, the Sidewinder of 2011 would be almost unrecognisable to a technician who worked on the 1956 version.

Flight IV might as well be futuristic super ship. Hard to imagine all of the technology (that works) from Zumwalt not being folded in.

Of course we could get into nationalistic dickswinging contests if that's what the forum community would prefer.

I'd like to see a technical discussion on what the Flt IV might look like.

Given space issues, I can see the hull being lengthen, and perhaps widen. And nuke propulsion perhaps with reactor developed from those to be used on SSBN(X)?

I'd suspect it'd have less clutter, and have a more "stealthy" superstructure. But because VLS allows new missiles in old launchers, the weapons shouldn't change too much imo.

Edit: Also obviously new radars, and thus new (or no) directors, etc

If EMC2 gets the Polywell reactor working then we could be looking at a drop in replacement for the engines on all of the Burkes, as that is one of the target plant sizes.

If the Burkes and other ships go to 70 years (and this I have trouble beliving, Father Ocean is hard on small tincans) is it possible some class of ships may go 100 years of active service and I mean real service, not tied to a dock or goes out to sea twice a year or so. Has this ever been done?
This would be the same as the HMS Indefatigable still serving today. (Which gives me an idea for a AU ship or two)

While ships of the Burke heritage will be serving for 70 years, I doubt any individual hull is imagined to serve for more than the usual 30-40.
